Celebrating Sequoia High School's 120th Anniversary!
Sequoia PTSA's weekly eNewsletter in partnership with the Sequoia High School Education Foundation
President's Message
Ready... set...
The 12th month is here.  Really?  Hopefully, you were able to get a bit of time off this past weekend to be with friends and family or even just have some quiet time to yourself.  Now we launch into a month full of activities, responsibilities and perhaps even a little merriment.

Sequoia's activities calendar is packed with sporting events: girls and boys soccer matches continue throughout the month, and our girls basketball players hit the courts.  Next week, student athletes and their families will gather for Fall Sports Award Night.  Performing Arts events continue, culminating with two Winter Music Concerts featuring student singers and instrumentalists. The PTSA and ELAC have their final meetings of 2015 where members will report on the continuing efforts to strengthen our Sequoia community through class activities, fundraising, and outreach and support to those in need.

As for responsibilities, teachers will be providing the last bit of this semester's coursework, and students will be hunkering down to study for finals.  Let's do ourselves a favor and take a collective deep breath. We can help our kids by providing them with the time and a place to study, the opportunity to eat well and get enough sleep, and the knowledge that they are more important to us than the outcome of any one project or test result.

And for the merriment...
Many seniors are finishing up their college applications and getting ready to press "submit."  Good luck to you all; you deserve some celebration!  As the last day of school winds down, teachers will be treated to a PTSA/ELAC-sponsored holiday lunch at their staff meeting.  All parents are welcome to lend a hand and thank our teachers.

Sarah Kay, poet and founder of Project Voice said recently, "It's December and nobody asked if I was ready."  Boy, do I know how she feels. But there's no going back...so have a great month and I hope to see you around campus!

PTSA Meeting Tomorrow
Join us on Tuesday, December 1 at 7 PM in the MPR for our monthly general membership meeting.  Our speaker this month is Lori McBride, Court & Community Schools and Foster Youth Liaison, 17th District PTA.  Lori will speak about supporting our at-risk youth and how our communities can help.  She will share information about who these youth are, the programs provided, and what financial support is needed.

Also, hear from Principal Sean Priest and learn about PTSA happenings such as 8th grade transition activities, Reflections contest results, and grad week planning. View the full agenda here.  We hope to see you on Tuesday!

Adopt A Family!
In this season of giving, consider providing a holiday gift for a family in need in our Sequoia community.  Click here to sign up; items should be wrapped and delivered to the Parent Center at school by December 14.  Thank you for your generosity!

Dream Club Commended
The Dream Club hosted its 6th annual fundraising dinner in the MPR on November 20th.  Over 200 people from the community came to support their undocumented college-bound neighbors, classmates, students and friends.  Four students and two parents told of their challenges, successes and dreams.  The crowd enthusiastically participated in table dialogues where each person had a chance to share some of his or her own story.

The club received commendations from the offices of Representative Anna Eshoo and Congresswoman Jackie Speier, and in turn presented outgoing Redwood City Council member Barbara Pierce with a small gift in appreciation of her strong and vocal support over the years. Let's Throw a Party!
The annual Holiday Staff Luncheon will be held on Thursday, December 17. Help pitch in and show our appreciation to our teachers and staff for all their hard work!  Click here to provide a food item, donate a gift card, or help at the event (shifts from 11:00-12:30 and 1:45-2:30).

Physics Classes Benefit from Mini-Grants
In last spring's mini-grants, one of the projects awarded was "Lego Manipulatives for Laws of Conservation."  Physics teachers Allison Stafford and Ben Canning report on how this is now being used in their classes:

"In Physics 1, we used Lego bricks this fall to create bar graphs showing energy transformations in order to introduce the idea of conservation of energy. For example, students showed the transformation of kinetic energy into gravitational potential energy and then back into kinetic energy for a soccer ball kicked up into the air using different colors of Legos. We were especially excited to do this activity because it gave our EL students and others a concrete and visual representation for the idea that the total amount of energy (Legos) stays the same throughout; it's just the type (color) that is changing. Post-activity assessments showed that students grasped onto this idea better than ever before!"

Thank you to the SHSEF for providing funding for the Mini-Grants Program!

Photo Scavenger Hunt
Where is this beast located on our campus?

Last week's answer:  This is a giant-sized slide rule hanging on the wall in the math hallway.

If you have a photo you would like to submit, please send it to [email protected]. Be sure to include information about what the item in the photo is and where it is located.  We look forward to hearing from you!

"Christmas Carol The Gift" with Sequoia Students
Charles Dickens' story of "A Christmas Carol" is magically brought to life as a musical show in Belmont at NDNU theater December 11-13 and 17-20.  This show, otherwise known as "A Christmas Carol The Gift," is a gift to the community as 8 of the 9 shows are FREE. Audience members are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food or toy donation that will joyfully be distributed.  One show charges admission to offset production costs, and includes a party.  These shows traditionally sell out and you should order tickets in advance.  Visit www.christmascarolthegift.com for more information including how to get tickets.  Sequoia students Lexi Battaglini and Jojo Solfrank perform in this year's 30th anniversary show.
